Hair Replacement Revolution or Dr Jensens Guide to Body Chemistry and Nutrition

Hair Replacement Revolution: A Consumer's Guide to Effective Hair Replacement Techniques

Author: Emanuel Marritt MD

The truth is that there is no single cure for hair loss quite yet. However, there is some pretty exciting news--revolutionary drugs, high-tech surgical techniques, and hair cover-ups that are more natural looking than ever. For those experiencing hair loss, the problem lies in seeing through the hype of hair-replacement ads, and finding the product or technique that really works.

The Hair Replacement Revolution is an easy-to-understand guide that discusses each hair replacement option--its strengths, its weaknesses, and its breakthroughs. For each of the three basic approaches to hair replacement--drug therapies, artificial hair systems, and surgical procedures--the author first explains the most popular techniques available, including the latest advances. The author then discusses the pros and cons of each approach, and offers guidelines that allow readers to evaluate what is best for their own specific needs. Finally, and most important, Dr. Marritt highlights important questions that consumers should-and must--ask to avoid potentially dangerous and unexpected consequences. By separating the fact from the hype, and the safe from the questionable, The Hair Replacement Revolution provides an accurate picture of what you can actually expect-not what you can wish for.

Optimal Wellness

Author: Ralph Golan MD

If you fall into the gray zone between health and disease but your physician can't find anything wrong ... if you have an illness for which modern medicine can offer no cure ... if your medical treatments are "working," but you still don't feel healthy, then Optimal Wellness is just what the doctor ordered.

This empowering self-care guide challenges the "crisis/disease" orientation of modern medicine — prescription drugs, expensive surgery, and high-tech intervention — and points the way to a more comprehensive system of health care that heals the whole person.

Learn to identify and understand the "Ten Common Denominators" of illness that most frequently threaten optimal health. Take the Master Symptom Survey, which reveals the hidden conditions that are eroding your good health. Find a practical framework for identifying dietary hazards and creating your own optimal diet. Learn about recommended dosages for vitamins, minerals, and herbal remedies —"New age and age-old" approaches to wellness, such as fasting, herbal medicine, and energy medicine. Read the guidelines for choosing and working more effectively with your doctor and other health professionals. And much, much more.

Publishers Weekly

Prevention and self-care are the watchwords for this hefty health manual by a Seattle physician whose practice combines conventional and alternative medicine. Golan examines the underlying causes of chronic ailments, which he dubs the Ten Common Denominators of Illness. Dietary hazards and nutritional deficiencies receive the greatest attention; most of the other sources of illness he lists are also diet-related, e.g., toxic bowel, food allergies. In another section, he offers an alphabetical list of 100 common ailments from abscesses to water retention, identifying symptoms, common causes and suggested treatments and preventive measures for each. While approaches to wellness occasionally include conventional medical treatment, most are recommendations for dietary changes, herbal remedies and nutritional supplements. Although Golan, who teaches naturopathic medicine, slights other alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic and massage, his holistic approach will appeal to those frustrated by the disease-oriented approach of conventional medicine. (Nov.)

Library Journal

Holistic physician Golan provides here a detailed compilation of self-care methods from both New Age and "age-old" approaches. His focus is on developing health rather than "fixing" disease. Chapters cover fasting, herbal therapies, acupuncture, homeopathy, natural immunity, improved diet, environmental health, and detoxification. Golan also includes a master symptom survey to identify conditions for which modern medicine has no cure, offering specific guidance in using alternative methods to create optimal wellness. This useful health reference is recommended for public libraries.-Valerie Vaughan, Hatfield P.L., Mass.

Naomis Guide to Aging Gratefully or Daily Word for Healing

Naomi's Guide to Aging Gratefully: Facts, Myths, and Good News for Boomers

Author: Naomi Judd

Naomi Judd has been called "The Face of the Boomer Generation." At 78 million strong, boomers have become America's largest demographic. In Naomi's Guide to Aging Gratefully, she debunks society's harmful myths about aging and finds more meaningful ways we can define ourselves so we can enjoy (rather than dread) getting older.

Freedom is the focus, and there's no better time than now to free yourself from untrue and outdated ideas about your own potential. Naomi is full of fresh ideas to help readers look at their futures in a whole new way. The aging process, as Naomi shows, is an opportunity for new experiences, original routines, and more contentment than ever before.

Naomi offers tips on finding simplicity, streamlining possessions, disengaging from "energy vampires," and discovering the most effective ways to support your life force and boost your energy. Each chapter includes vital new health information and proactive lifestyle suggestions for your body, mind, and spirit. Naomi has a solution-oriented approach to everything from beauty tips to getting in sync hormonally with bioidentical HRT. She also offers wisdom on dealing with grief as well as enlightening ideas on how to recognize and enjoy your own uniqueness no matter how old you are.

Packed with personal anecdotes, commentary from celebrity friends and data from renowned doctors, and plenty of Naomi's own special brand of lemonade-out-of-lemons wit and wisdom, Naomi's Guide to Aging Gratefully encourages readers to believe that it's never too early or too late to enter an important new chapter in their lives and embrace opportunities to become their happiest ever.

Publishers Weekly

Country music star Judd (Naomi's Breakthrough Guide) offers a mix of salty advice and inspirational suggestions to baby boomers as they age. Based on her own experience, interviews with contemporaries and reliable medical tips, Judd provides a sprightly and engaging perspective on the goal of healthily sustaining oneself physically and emotionally. Judd debunks the youth-obsessed media, which relentlessly stereotype and ridicule seniors. The author strongly believes in honing a positive attitude that includes practicing five daily acts of kindness, such as extending oneself to neighbors. Judd also affirms the importance of building a strong network of friends and family as well as relationships that may include a long-term love and satisfying sexual involvement. Judd's strong faith leads her to offer evidence for the value of spirituality as one ages, and she devotes a chapter to the often touchy subject of getting along with children and grandchildren. Nicely juxtaposed with her intellectual and psychological musings are the author's down-to-earth recommendations on nutrition, exercise and the role of both traditional and complementary medicine. Uplifting and informative, this should be popular with both fans and middle-aged readers looking for advice on how to move gracefully, and gratefully, into middle and old age. Photos not seen by PW. (Jan.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

With humor and common sense, Judd-mother, singer, and television personality-offers a wide range of motivation and life strategies for baby boomers. Her topics include aging in a youth-obsessed society, sexuality, mental health, physical attractiveness, finding new life-challenges, and one's relationships with adult children and their children. Judd illustrates many of her points by discussing what she has discovered through her own widely publicized difficulties and mistakes. These experiences have proven to her the value of curiosity, humor, persistence, and developing a positive attitude. Having gone to experts for help, she can recommend from personal experience the expertise of Andrew Weil on nutrition and Judith Orloff on recognizing and combating energy vampires. Sure to inform and delight many 50-plus listeners, this program, expertly read by Renée Raudman, is recommended for self-help collections in public and hospital libraries.-Kathleen Sullivan, Phoenix P.L.

Folk Medicine in Southern Appalachia or The Egyptian Yoga

Folk Medicine in Southern Appalachia

Author: Anthony Cavender

In the first comprehensive exploration of the history and practice of folk medicine in the Appalachian region, Anthony Cavender melds folklore, medical anthropology, and Appalachian history and draws extensively on oral histories and archival sources from the nineteenth century to the present. He provides a complete tour of ailments and folk treatments organized by body systems, as well as information on medicinal plants, patent medicines, and magico-religious beliefs and practices. He investigates folk healers and their methods, profiling three living practitioners: an herbalist, a faith healer, and a Native American healer. The book also includes an appendix of botanicals and a glossary of folk medical terms.

Demonstrating the ongoing interplay between mainstream scientific medicine and folk medicine, Cavender challenges the conventional view of southern Appalachia as an exceptional region isolated from outside contact. His thorough and accessible study reveals how Appalachian folk medicine encompasses such diverse and important influences as European and Native American culture and America's changing medical and health-care environment. In doing so, he offers a compelling representation of the cultural history of the region as seen through its health practices.

Joslin Diabetes Great Chefs Cook Healthy Cookbook

Author: Frances Towner Giedt

Five-Star Food for People with Diabetes

Living with diabetes doesn't mean you can't enjoy five-star food. With The Joslin Diabetes Great Chefs Cook Healthy Cookbook, you can savor sophisticated, restaurant-quality cuisine at home while maintaining your blood glucose levels and healthy lifestyle. Award-winning authors Frances Towner Giedt and Bonnie Sanders Polin, Ph.D., and 114 superstar chefs from around the world, in conjunction with the world-famous Joslin Diabetes Center, have come together to produce a cookbook of extraordinary food for special occasions, specifically for people with diabetes. Here are more than 135 delicious recipes from acclaimed restaurants, each with a nutritional analysis that includes a list of carbohydrates, calories, and Joslin Choices provided by Joslin's Nutrition Services Staff.

This book will help you plan for an elegant dinner party or an intimate dinner for two, with sumptuous recipes that include David Paul Johnson's Spicy Lobster Gazpacho with Avocado Crème Fraîche from David Paul's Lahaina Grill, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii; Asparagus and Gingered Grapefruit Salad from Ris Lacoste of 1789, Washington, D.C.; Broiled Halibut with Spring Mixed Beans and Spicy Thai Lemongrass Broth from Susanna Foo of Susanna Foo, in Philadelphia; Grilled Duck Breast with Sautéed Peaches and Tuscan Bread Salad from Don Pintabona of Tribeca Grill, New York City; Banana Pot Stickers with Mango Lime Sorbet and Roasted Pineapple from Michael Herschman of Mojo Café, in Cleveland, Ohio; and Light Apple and Lime Soufflé from Michel Guérard of Les Prés d'Eugénie, in Eugénie-les-Bains, France.

Eight pages ofgorgeous color photographs will convince you to get into the kitchen and start cooking. Whether you're living with diabetes or just love fine restaurant food, The Joslin Diabetes Great Chefs Cook Healthy Cookbook will become a favorite in your culinary arsenal.

Publishers Weekly

The latest offering from the authors of the James Beard Foundation Cookbook Award-winner The Joslin Diabetes Gourmet Cookbook contains elegant recipes from well-known chefs, each designed to fit the special dietary requirements of diabetics. The recipes are appropriately ambitious, and sometimes rely on costly ingredients, such as the Leek Terrine with Vinaigrette and Truffles, which requires two truffles (although the authors allow for canned if necessary), or the Medallion of Braised Nandu (Ostrich) on Rose-Hip Sauce with Wild Patagonian Mushrooms, Served in a Nest of Whole-Wheat Pasta, whose name says it all. Because these recipes come from the files of internationally renowned chefs, the simple, five-ingredient dish is a rarity (it's opposite is not: a recipe from the Pulse Sports Club would have home cooks making Basil-Orange Oil, Ginger Juice, Spice Powder, Noodle Salad, Tamarind Coulis and Pepper Brunoise-all to dress a top-quality piece of tuna). But it's a pleasure indeed to know that even people with restricted diets can concoct Steamed Cod on Broccoli Mousse with Red Bell Pepper Salsa, Watercress Pesto, Oven-Dried Celery Root, and Balsamic Reduction and not have to worry about excess carbohydrates or calories. In fact, these recipes will work well for anyone, diabetic or not, who longs to cook healthy meals with four-star flair. 8 pages of color illustrations not seen by PW (Oct. 7) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

Giedt and Polin, both diabetics themselves, wrote in conjunction with the renowned Joslin Center several other books, including The Joslin Diabetes Gourmet Cookbook. This time they offer a collection of recipes from an impressive roster of three- and four-star restaurant chefs from around the world, including Michel Gu rard, Alice Waters, and many other culinary luminaries. The recipes are sophisticated and elegant-perfect dinner-party fare-but many of them are quite easy to prepare. The authors have grouped main course recipes under "Small Plates" and "Large Plates," along with starters, soups, salads, vegetables and other sides, and desserts. Each recipe, of course, includes nutrition information, and there are many suggested menus scattered throughout. For all subject collections. Triumph Over Hepatitis C: An Alternative Medicine Solution

Author: Lloyd Wright

Revised and Expanded Third Edition.

Triumph Over Hepatitis C, An Alternative Medicine Solution 2002 Revised and Expanded Edition contains my story of how I contracted hepatitis C from blood transfusions in 1979 and the graphic turbo charged events that followed.

I document my encounters with the medical community and their failure to deal with this virus. In this new expanded edition I document the horrific injustices I encountered and expose the fact that this same set of circumstances still plague the medical community today eight years later.

After speaking with over 50,000 people who have hepatitis c, speaking at several universities and conventions and speaking on numerous radio shows, I still encounter the same lack of knowledge about hepatitis c both in American society and the medical community.

I have answered the most frequently asked questions encountered over the past 3 Ѕ years of constant contact with the infected.

There are several new chapters that detail the long-term effects of interferon.

In Part 2, I detail the exact program that I used to treat the virus after interferon failed.

My blood tests and liver biopsy are included as well as my herb schedule which tells how and when to best take the suggested herbs, supplements and glandulars.

This illustrated edition includes many new testimonials and research by many Medical Doctors who know that interferon is a drug looking for a disease to cure and hepatitis c is not it.

About the Author

I contracted hepatitis c in 1979 from 4 blood transfusions. After 15 years of misdiagnoses I was finally diagnosed by mistake. My doctor told me that interferon was an 80% cure and it was my only hope. After interferon failed Idecided I was not finished yet. I was given 3 to 5 years to live. That was 8 years ago.

After curing myself from this tragic virus, I wrote my first book, Triumph Over Hepatitis C, and discovered that thousands of people had similar experiences as I did.

Thousands called and emailed to find out just what to do. I then began to supply people with the same items I used to get well at wholesale prices.

This was never my intent; it just developed and has saved the lives of many.

People who have been bed ridden for years get up and go back to work.

People from all over the world come to me just to say thank you for having their lives back. It is just overwhelming.

I then published Hepatitis C Free, Alternative Medicine VS. The Drug Industry, The People Speak. This is a book of testimonials, a cross section of over 50,000 emails and letters from people who did some of what was in my first book. Many have been blessed from my experience and I continue to help every person I can.

Cosmic Fusion or Easy Stretching Workbook

Cosmic Fusion: The Inner Alchemy of the Eight Forces

Author: Mantak Chia

HEALTH / TAOISM

Cosmic Fusion is an advanced level of Inner Alchemy that teaches how to bring the physical body into balance with the energy body--a necessary prerequisite for the formation of the universal body, the pearl of compassion that is one with Original Creation and the Universal Tao. Cosmic Fusion works with the expression of the eight pakua (bagwa) of Chinese cosmology, through which all creation is divided and given form, its nature, and definition.

Cosmic Fusion exercises establish the spiritual body firmly in the lower abdomen, where Chi energy is gathered and distributed to all parts of the physical body. The fully illustrated exercises in this book also show how to collect and channel the greater energies of the stars and planets. By “fusing” all these different energies together, a harmonious whole is created, a unity of what is above and below. As heavenly and earthly forces are brought into balance, the life perfectly suited to the practitioner manifests, allowing the spirit body to prepare to move into worlds beyond--and back.

A student of several Taoist masters, MANTAK CHIA founded the Universal Healing Tao System in 1979 and has taught and certified tens of thousands of students and instructors from all over the world. He is the director of the Tao Garden Integrative Medicine Health Spa and Resort training center in northern Thailand and is the author of twenty-six books, including Energy Balance through the Tao and The Inner Structure of Tai Chi.

Herbal Remedies from the Wild or The Artists Complete Health and Safety Guide

Herbal Remedies from the Wild: Finding and Using Medicinal Herbs

Author: Corinne Martin

A handbook for the home herbalist, detailing how to identify, gather, and prepare more than fifty different wild plants for medicinal use. Traditional herbal medicine, long practiced as a primary form of healing in many cultures around the world, is gaining tremendous popularity and acceptance in this country. Plants such as echinacea and St. John's wort have become common remedies, and new scientific studies show evidence that these plants are in fact effective in bolstering the immune system and treating depression. Anyone interested in plants and in learning more about how to use them to enhance health will enjoy this book. Herbal Remedies From the Wild gives full descriptions of 52 medicinal herbs common to North America—plants such as valerian, used for insomnia; red clover, for coughs; and elderberry, for fever. For each species, the author gives details on its appearance, where it is found, how to harvest and prepare it, and the recommended dosage for specific ailments (including cautions about conditions that preclude the use of the herb). The introduction provides instructions for making teas, tinctures, salves, and syrups. A line drawing of each herb aids in identification. A huge surge of interest in herbal medicine coincides with this book's re-release. Herbal Remedies from the Wild is a revised and redesigned edition of the book Earthmagic, which sold nearly 10,000 copies in its first edition. 52 b/w illustrations.

The Artist's Complete Health and Safety Guide

Author: Monona Rossol

The safe use of art or craft materials requires awareness and training. A host of toxic industrial chemicals and environmental pollutants are often found in these materials. Since The Artist's Complete Health and Safety Guide was first published in April, 1990, new research has changed the safety information about and threshold limit values for a number of chemicals used in art materials. This revised edition is a guide to using these potentially toxic materials safely and ethically. It is also designed to help art workers and teachers comply with health and safety laws in the United States and Canada. Coverage includes technical hazards information in plain language, tables of data on art materials ingredients, steps to comply with health and safety laws, safety checklists for studios and classrooms, detailed descriptions of safe practices, recommendations for proper protective equipment, and a list of non-toxic products for use by children and others who are especially sensitive to toxic substances.

Hygiene Industrial Association Journal

This book is well written, easy to read, practical, authoritative, and useful, not only for artists but also for teachers and industrial hygienists.

Library Journal

Most artists are at least vaguely aware of the dangers their profession poses, and several high-profile lawsuits have led to complex regulations regarding the handling of art materials. These concerns are ably addressed by Rossol's manual, a standard in the field. A chemist, artist, and industrial hygienist, Rossol is also the founder and president of ACTS (Arts, Crafts and Theater Safety). Her use of the word "complete" in the title is not misplaced; other books in the field, such as Michael McCann's Health Hazards Manual for Artists, don't come close. Four exhaustive sections cover regulations and specific hazards, artists' raw materials, precautions for individual media, and reproductive risks to artists. Fully equipped with appendixes on sources, governmental agencies, and an annotated reference list, this vitally important volume is essential for any art collection. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

It is now widely recognized that the supplies commonly used by artists can be highly toxic. In fact, they are regulated under an amendment to the Toxic Substances Control Act. The author, herself an artist and a chemist, has completely revised her first edition of this guide to handling such substances (Allworth Pr., 1990), a highly important work for any artist, craftsperson, or teacher in the arts. Rossol covers solvents, pigments and dyes, metals and metal compounds, minerals, and plastics. She discusses their relationships to diseases of the skin, eyes, respiratory system, heart and blood, nervous system, liver, kidneys, bladder, and reproductive system. This is more than just an alarming catalog of hazards, however; the book is largely devoted to practical precautions for various media, including painting, printmaking, textiles, glass, photography, and smithing. This comprehensive guide is highly recommended for any artist's studio or art teacher's classroom and for all libraries that serve those in the arts and crafts.-Daniel J. Lombardo, Jones Lib., Amherst, Mass.

Body Work - Beauty and Self-Image in American Culture

Author: Debra L Gimlin

Today women are lifting weights to build muscle, wrapping their bodies in seaweed to reduce unwanted water retention, attending weigh-ins at diet centers, and devoting themselves to many other types of "body work." Filled with the voices of real women, this book unravels the complicated emotional and intellectual motivations that drive them as they confront American culture's unreachable beauty ideals. This powerful feminist study lucidly and compellingly argues against the idea that the popularity of body work means that women are enslaved to a male-fashioned "beauty myth." Essential reading for understanding current debates on beauty, Body Work demonstrates that women actually use body work to escape that beauty myth.
Debra Gimlin focuses on four sites where she conducted in-depth research--a beauty salon, aerobics classes, a plastic surgery clinic, and a social and political organization for overweight women. The honest and provocative interviews included in this book uncover these women's feelings about their bodies, their reasons for attempting to change or come to terms with them, and the reactions of others in their lives. These interviews show that women are redefining their identities through their participation in body work, that they are working on their self-images as much as on their bodies. Plastic surgery, for example, ultimately is an empowering life experience for many women who choose it, while hairstyling becomes an arena for laying claim to professional and social class identities.
This book develops a convincing picture of how women use body work to negotiate the relationship between body and self, a process that inevitably involves coming to terms withour bodies' deviation from cultural ideals. One of the few studies that includes empirical evidence of women's own interpretations of body work, this important project is also based firmly in cultural studies, symbolic interactionism, and feminism. With this book, Debra Gimlin adds her voice to those of scholars who are now looking beyond the surface of the beauty myth to the complex reality of women's lives.

Conscious Breathing or Living with RSDS

Conscious Breathing: Breathwork for Health, Stress Release, and Personal Mastery

Author: Gaylord Hendricks

Conscious Breathing draws on more than twenty years of research and practice to present a simple yet comprehensive program that can be used every day to improve energy, mental clarity, and physical health. As the essential life-force of the body, the breath influences how we feel on every level. But many traditional breathing programs are limited by esoteric or cultlike elements. Pioneering therapist Gay Hendricks has refined the most important practices into a mainstream healing tool that can provide dramatic benefits—ranging from lowered blood pressure and pain reduction to elimination of depression and anxiety—in as little as ten minutes a day. At the core of the book are eight key breathing exercises, fully illustrated, with step-by-step instructions, plus the "short form" ten-minute breathing program. Additional chapters provide breathing techniques for special concerns, including: Breathing to aid in trauma release and recovery from addictions. Treatment of asthma and other respiratory problems. Enhancement of sex and communication between couples. Improved concentration and stamina in sports.

Publishers Weekly

``In your lifetime you will breathe in and out more than a hundred million times.... What if you made a tiny improvement in something you did that many times?'' So queries Hendricks, a professor of counseling at the University of Colorado and author of Conscious Loving, at the start of this quietly assured guide. His guided breathing exercises, most done lying down and in combination with gentle movements, are designed to free the movement of the diaphragm, increase oxygenation and relax the body. Benefits can include stress reduction, pain management, improved health and spiritual growth. In his discussion of the anatomy of breathing, Hendricks errs in saying there are two lobes in each human lung (the right lung has three lobes), but this handsome handbook, appealingly illustrated and laced with aphorisms about breathing from sports heroes, poets and philosophers, offers much of value to those just fostering awarenes of breathing to such advanced practitioners as singers and athletes. Fitness Nutrition for Special Dietary Needs or Behavior Based Safety Process

Fitness Nutrition for Special Dietary Needs

Author: Stella Lucia Volp

As physical activity becomes increasingly popular, the diversity of active participants is greater than ever. Professionals working with active clients have an appreciation for the fact that many of their clients face unique dietary challenges. Fitness Nutrition for Special Dietary Needs is the first book to deliver state-of-the-art nutrition information pertaining to a variety of these special populations with distinctive dietary needs.

This easy-to-use reference provides scientifically based nutrition guidelines for a wide range of physically active clients—including vegetarians, pregnant and menopausal women, children and adolescents, older adults, people with diabetes, and participants in weight-restricted sports. Written in a straightforward manner, Fitness Nutrition for Special Dietary Needs is ideal for athletic trainers and personal trainers. It allows them to guide clients in proper eating for optimal exercise performance, and it recognizes when a client needs to be referred to a registered dietitian. The text may also be used as a quick reference for nutritionists and dietitians and as a valuable resource for those who exercise competitively, for health and fitness, or just for fun.

The following are some of the text's useful features:

  • 50 figures, tables, and special elements that you can photocopy and give to patients or clients to ensure they follow your suggestions—including examples of poor versus better carbohydrate choices, the Motherwell Pregnancy Food Pyramid, and the healthy effects of certain fats
  • 12 real-life case studies from guest dietitians to illustrate how the material can be applied in a variety of settings
  • Sample meal plans and an appendix of alternative food choices that you can photocopy so you can design individualized plans for patients or clients and teach them how to adapt the plans to accommodate personal tastes and needs
  • Exercise guidelines for specific populations to assist you in prescribing appropriate exercise for each person's condition and stage of life
In addition, the reference is valuable to coaches and sports medicine physicians in their efforts to provide sound dietary advice to both noncompetitive exercisers who want to stay fit and competitive athletes who want to achieve optimal performance. The text contains practical guidelines for addressing the needs of children who exercise and play sports as well as the needs of overweight athletes and exercisers in weight-dependent sports—an area often overlooked in sport nutrition books.

Physical therapists who work with the geriatric population will also find the resource useful because it will bring them up to date on meeting the nutrition and exercise needs of older adults as they progress through the physiological changes that come with aging. Psychiatrists will use the practical information to ensure proper counseling, healthy nutrition, and appropriate exercises for patients with eating disorders and disordered eating.

There is no better resource for anyone who needs to understand scientifically based nutrition guidelines for a wide range of physically active people. Fitness Nutrition for Special Dietary Needs explains nutrition guidelines for unique populations and also helps you prescribe a healthy diet appropriate to each client's condition and stage of life to ensure they achieve optimal performance and stay fit.

Reviewer:Michelle H Tegenkamp, BS, MS(University of Wisconsin-Madison)
Description:This book provides nutrition and exercise related information on groups of people with specific needs. It includes reproducible handouts that can be used by professionals and incorporates case studies at the end of each chapter.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a sports nutrition oriented reference to health professionals on specific groups such as vegetarians, children/adolescents, older adults, pregnant and postmenopausal women, individuals with eating disorders, and people who exercise in extreme climates. It is useful to have this information in one reference and the authors meet their objectives.
Audience:The audience includes registered dietitians, sports nutritionists, athletic and personal trainers, physical therapists, and sports medicine physicians. The book is written at a level that is easy to understand for people without an in-depth knowledge of nutrition. This is a good basic reference for the intended audience, but may be too basic for individuals with experience in the area.
Features:Each chapter covers specific nutritional needs of a particular group, physical activity recommendations, and special issues related to that group. Each chapter also contains several case studies for that specific population, which repeat a lot of what is covered in the chapters while adding the element of application to the information. The book is all black and white, but this allows for the reproducible figures which are a unique and relevant feature.
Assessment:There are few if any books that include nutrition and sportsinformation on all these special groups. This book would be beneficial for professionals without a lot of background knowledge in these areas.

Behavior-Based Safety Process: Managing Involvement for an Injury-Free Culture

Author: Thomas R Kraus

The Behavior-Based Safety Process Since the behavior-based approach to accident prevention was launched in 1980 by the author and his associates, safety performance is increasingly prominent on the agendas of many companies. Several powerful factors contribute to this trend. The widespread reorganization of personnel into work-groups that are leaner and more self-directed, the increasing importance of international competition, the growing awareness of critical environmental issuesthese and related factors highlight the value of any mechanism that promotes continuous improvement in safety performance. Detailing a step-by-step approach to just such a mechanism for continuous improvement, The Behavior-Based Safety Process is a path-breaking guide that represents an important resource for anyone concerned with performance related issues in the workplace. As the title indicates, the focus is on process versus programs. The reason is simple: off-the-shelf safety imposed from the top down does not meet the safety needs of most organizations. This fact has been abundantly demonstrated in facility after facility throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In genuinely meeting the need for continuous improvement in safety performance, the behavior-based approach presents many parallels with the quality improvement process. Both of these approaches use scientific methods to identify, measure, and provide feedback on upstream factors of excellence. In the case of the behavior-based approach to safety, these upstream factors are critical behaviors that are the leading indicators of safety performance in the organization, targeting areas of concern in advance of even first-aid incidents. For anin-depth treatment of how to integrate behavioral and statistical methodologies, see the authors companion volume from Van Nostrand Reinhold: Employee-Driven Systems for Safe Behavior. In addition to presenting these parallels with quality. The Behavior-Based Safety Process also provides powerful techniques aimed at implementation issues: organizational development, trainer-training, and employee involvement. The author and his associates developed these techniques over a decade of consultation with a variety of industries, working closely in that time with such safety leaders as Monsanto, Shell Chemical Company, ARCO Chemical, ALCOA, Rohm and Haas, Scott Paper Company, Georgia Gulf Corporation, The Pillsbury Company, and Chevron U.S.A.

The Anti-Aging Solution: 5 Simple Steps to Looking and Feeling Young

Author: Marcia Zimmerman

With a few simple lifestyle changes, you can reap amazing visible and tangible benefits in just a few days—and this groundbreaking book shows you how.

Written by an all-star team of internationally acclaimed anti-aging experts, The Anti-Aging Solution is the first guide to reveal how you can reverse aging on a genetic level. By following a uniquely effective five-step program—which includes stress-reduction techniques, easy-to-follow dietary guidelines, moderate exercise, inexpensive skin treatments, and supplements—you can reverse DNA damage, enhance DNA repair, and start to look younger, feel younger, and be younger right away. The Anti-Aging Solution shows you how to:

• Say goodbye to aching joints, sagging skin, and fatigue

• Improve the quality and function of the genetic material in your cells

• Ramp up your body's self-repair functions

• Increase your stamina, endurance, and sex drive

• Dramatically improve your resistance to disease, including many cancers

• Have more youthful, radiant skin

Publishers Weekly

Anti-aging expert Giampapa (Quantum Longevity), DNA researcher Pero and nutritionist Zimmerman present a five-step program that claims to reverse the aging process. Before readers can say they've seen this before, the authors insist their book is different because it "attacks aging at its genetic roots with a comprehensive plan." Giampapa, Pero and Zimmerman first present a set of simple self-examinations for readers to "factor their personal aging equation" by measuring "aging indicators" like chronic pain, poor memory and reduced mobility. After a detailed explanation of how poor nutrition and free-radical damage promote aging, the authors present their program, which intends to change "the way our genes express themselves." The five stages consist of reducing stress, enhancing nutrition, exercising regularly, using dietary supplements and caring for the skin. For each step, the authors offer an abundance of helpful pointers; their advice on nutrition and its effects is particularly useful. Among the book's perks are easy to follow, color-coded charts detailing a healthy diet (which can be modified for vegetarians), recommended exercise routines that are beneficial but not overly demanding, skin care regimens and a list of suppliers of nutraceuticals (natural, bioactive chemical compounds that have health-promoting, disease-preventing or medicinal properties). (Mar.) Forecast: With a $75,000 marketing budget, publicity in New York and New Jersey, and national print and radio campaigns, this book has a shot at selling out its 50,000-copy first printing. Cancer Therapy or Insulin Pump Therapy Demystified

Cancer Therapy: The Independent Consumer's Guide to Non-Toxic Treatment and Prevention

Author: Ralph W Moss

This thorough guide is a must-read for cancer patients and their families seeking treatment options.

Library Journal

In this consumer's guide, the author of The Cancer Industry ( LJ 2/15/80; LJ 10/15/89, rev. ed.) discusses alternative cancer therapies that include vitamins, minerals, herbs, diets, immune boosters, and other substances. He also covers conventional chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation but emphasizes their adverse effects. Though he provides references to scientific articles, most of them are animal or tissue culture studies; there is no information about the effectiveness of these treatments for humans. A strongly worded disclaimer encourages readers to seek medical advice before using these treatments, and a handshake symbol in the text indicates a substance that is compatible with conventional therapies. Moss also includes a resource list of organizations concerned with cancer treatment. Malin Dollinger, M.D. & others' Everyone's Guide to Cancer Therapy ( LJ 5/15/91) offers a detailed, objective overview of current cancer care that is a more appropriate choice for most collections, but Cancer Therapy is a useful addition to collections where there is interest in alternative health treatments.-- Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., Cal.

Insulin Pump Therapy Demystified: An Essential Guide for Everyone Pumping Insulin

Author: Gabrielle Kaplan Mayer

Increasing numbers of people with type 1 diabetes, all of whose lives depend on insulin, as well as type 2 diabetics, have already adopted the insulin pump, which replaces a regimen of insulin shots with a continuous delivery of insulin. Yet many who stand to benefit from "the pump" are put off by not fully understanding the device, and many already using it don't have anyone with whom to compare notes about its use. Now Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer, who has used the pump for more than three years, cuts through common personal fears about the pump and offers insight into the day-to-day challenges—and rewards—of life with it. Drawing on interviews with more than seventy-five pump users, including Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999, as well as diabetes experts and other health professionals, Kaplan-Mayer discusses how the pump affects your sex life, dealing with money issues, finding support, counting carbohydrates, and much more. Insulin Pump Therapy Demystified offers knowledgeable, informative, reassuring advice that all pump users—current and future—will find extremely valuable. Charts and tables add to this valuable insider's guide.

Library Journal

An insulin pump is one of the newer technologies for insulin delivery to diabetics, giving them greater control over blood sugars. Attached to the body, it allows the wearer to administer medication frequently without traditional syringes. Kaplan-Mayer, a diabetic who has used the pump since 1999, has written an essential guide for those considering use of the device. She emphasizes the necessary motivation for success as well as the pros and cons of the pump and encourages potential users to do extensive research, listing suggested web sites and organizations. She also covers body image, do's and don'ts, special occasions, troubleshooting, emotional implications, cost, and sleep considerations. A comparison chart of the various devices on the market is included. The author's discussion of what to expect during initial setup is very helpful, and she clearly explains changes in lifestyle after transition to the pump. An outstanding contribution to diabetes collections.-Janet M. Schneider, James A. Haley Veterans' Hosp., Tampa, FL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Cookbook

Author: Robert C Atkins

This book contains 250 of the most asked for recipes at the Atkins Center.

Publishers Weekly

In 1972, Atkins became a household name with his bestselling book, The Diet Revolution . In it, he claimed that to induce rapid weight loss one need only follow a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet--carbs were the culprit in keeping people overweight. Twenty years later, he published Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution , continuing to maintain that weight gain had little to do with fat intake--a controversial conviction. His latest work is a cookbook designed as a companion to the 1992 volume, and promising to provide the most ``mouth-watering meals for the most effective diet ever devised.'' In case readers are unfamiliar with his weight-loss program, Atkins describes its four stages and offers a selection of sample menus. Recipes range from the simple (hard-boiled eggs) to appetizers, salads, meats and poultry. No-holds-barred desserts call for heavy cream, eggs, sour cream and butter; despite Atkins's claims, his is not always light cooking. In the end, it's the desserts that illustrate the absurdities of the Atkins program: a recipe for cheesecake is chock full of cream cheese, eggs and creme fraiche, yet the final ingredient is 12 packets of a sugar substitute. ``Good cuisine has always rooted itself firmly in luxurious fat,'' writes Atkins in his introduction. Really? (June)

Library Journal

This complement to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (LJ 7/92) presents menus along with 200 recipes. Devised by Atkins Center director Fran Gare, the recipes follow the same high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet (including the complex carbohydrates) that Atkins proposes in his previous book. Atkins maintains that his diet controls diabetes, but the Atkins diet is contrary to information given by the American Dietetic Association and the American Diabetic Association. In the ``University of California at Berkeley Wellness Letter'' (December 1992), Dr. Sheldon Margen cautions people against following this diet, arguing that it could harm some people, especially diabetics. All cheeses are allowed freely (though they are high in fat, sodium, and cholesterol), as are all meats. Several recipes for salad dressings contain raw eggs, which could lead to salmonella food poisoning. Since the recipes in this book could be dangerous if followed, it is not recommended.-Loraine F. Sweetland, Rebok Memorial Lib., Silver Spring, Md.

Damaged Angels or Migraine

Damaged Angels: An Adoptive Mother Discovers the Tragic Toll of Alcohol in Pregnancy: Case Histories of FASD Families

Author: Bonnie Buxton

Part heartfelt memoir, part practical guide, Damaged Angels recounts Bonnie Buxton's struggles to raise an adopted daughter whom she didn't realize was afflicted with fetal alcohol disorder. Her book also offers guidance to parents who have children with FASD. By the time Bonnie's daughter Colette hit first grade, her parents were coping with her frequent stealing and lying, and the necessity of special education. At fourteen, she discovered drugs and sex; by eighteen, she was a crack addict living on the streets. After many frustrating years consulting numerous therapists, a TV news story gave Bonnie the answer she was looking for — and sent her on a quest for a diagnosis and help for Colette. Damaged Angels can aid and comfort all those affected by FASD — the most common cause of intellectual impairments in most industrialized nations — and reduce the number of babies born with this disorder in the future. The most important book on fetal alcohol disorder since Michael Dorris's The Broken Cord, Damaged Angels is a book for every parent, practitioner, and teacher working with a child with FASD.

Publishers Weekly

One day, clicking around on the family computer, Buxton found her 14-year-old adopted daughter Colette's will. What might have been a typical angst-filled document by another teenager was quite worrisome in this case: Colette suffered from fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), an impairment that affects one out of every 100 North Americans, according to Buxton. The disorder made her violent and antisocial. By the time Colette wrote the will, she was addicted to drugs and prone to violent outbursts; before she was 18, she had endured multiple brushes with death. Canadian journalist Buxton thoroughly describes her frustrating attempts to get help for her two daughters (another adopted daughter also suffered from FASD). Her honesty and humility are blunt: "The fact that Brian [her husband] and I could make each other laugh at least once a day, often making evil jokes about our children, was what kept us relatively sane...." The devil really is in the details in this sometimes painful account. On the one hand, Buxton's insistence on logging the minutiae of caring for her daughters is impressive, and she intersperses these sections with copious research and case studies on FASDs. On the other hand, her recounting of umpteen doctors' appointments, forms and phone calls weighs the memoir down and buries some salient gems. (May) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

In a book certain to be compared with Michael Dorris's The Broken Cord, Canadian journalist Buxton recounts the trials of raising an adopted daughter who displays puzzling self-destructive tendencies. Despite the best nurturing efforts of her parents, Colette begins stealing and lying as soon as she enters school; by 18, she is a homeless crack addict. In trying to help her daughter, Buxton does extensive research, learning eventually that Colette suffers from fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Including a superb bibliography, this is perhaps the definitive lay reader's guide to FASD research; highly recommended for all academic and public libraries. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

A Canadian journalist's experience raising an adoptive daughter with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) leads to an exploration of the disorder and a consciousness-raising campaign. Buxton, co-founder with her husband, Brian Philcox, of FASworld, a Canadian organization that promotes awareness of FAS around the world, had no idea that her daughter Colette, adopted at age three, had been permanently brain-damaged by prenatal alcohol. Hers is a harrowing account of coping with a child who was violent, lied, stole and had major learning problems. Buxton's pleas for help from professionals went unheeded, and by the time the uncontrollable Colette was 17, she had been in and out of a residential treatment center and was a crack addict living on the streets of Toronto. Soon after, she became pregnant twice. Seeing a television program on FAS in 1997 was the a-ha! moment for Buxton, who eventually discovered the work of Ann Streissguth, a psychologist specializing in FAS. Through her Web site, Buxton is now in touch with many people afflicted by FAS, and several of her chapters tell the stories of other adoptive parents' experiences, of adult survivors of FAS, and of mothers who gave birth to FAS babies. While most of the accounts are pain-filled, Buxton includes a few success stories from parents proud of the achievements of their FAS children. What those parents have in common, Buxton finds, are acceptance, reduced expectations, commitment, knowledge, creativity, a positive outlook and "a whopping sense of humor." While positive stories may offer encouragement and ideas to those trying to raise FAS children, this is not primarily a hands-on guidebook for parents; Buxton's aim is to make the syndromemore widely understood by all who work with children-pediatricians, teachers and social workers, police, judges and probation officers. The bibliography, however, does recommend several parenting guides, helpful newsletters and Web sites. Moving personal memoir melded with a realistic look at the widespread ramifications of drinking during pregnancy.

Ride Hard, Ride Smart is a practical, hands-on survival guide for the average motorcyclist. This book provides advanced survival and safety strategies for the developing rider. The vast wealth of knowledge and information developed by the motorcycle safety industry is bound into one chapter and one simple concept-the "three degrees of separation"-that sets the stage for the rest of the book. The three degrees of separation are riding strategies, training and skills, and protective gear-the things that separate the rider from death and injury. Hahn rates motorcycle risk and riding on a scale of one to ten, ten being mere moments away from certain death, and one being home safe in bed. Every motorcycle ride falls somewhere in between. Using the three degrees of separation, a rider can get the risk level down to a controllable level, creating the safest possible situation on a moving motorcycle.

Up in Smoke or Rapid Recovery Handbook

Up in Smoke: From Legislation to Litigation in Tobacco Politics

Author: Martha A Derthick

About the Author

Martha Derthick retired in 1999 from the Department of Government and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia, where she was the Julia Allen Cooper Professor. She is the author of numerous books on American government, including: Dilemmas of Scale in America's Federal Democracy (editor, 1999); Agency Under Stress: The Social Security Administration in American Government (1990); The Politics of Deregulation (with Paul J. Quirk, 1985); and Policymaking for Social Security (1979), which won the Kammerer Prize of the American Political Science Association as the best book of the year on American public policy. Before going to the University of Virginia, she was for twelve years a member of the Governmental Studies Program of the Brookings Institution, and was the program's director between 1978 and 1983. She has also taught at Dartmouth College, Stanford University, Harvard University, and Boston College.

Professor of American Politics, Boston College - Thomas P. ONeill, Jr.

"Here is a fascinating, well-written case study that introduces the reader to a brave new political world of ambitious state attorneys general, ingenious and fabulously wealthy tort lawyers, crusading regulators, and, of course, scheming tobacco executives. Just as importantly, it forces us to ask whether current efforts to exorcise the demon tobacco have weakened our commitment to self-government."

Rhodes College - Stephen Wirls

"After reading only the first few chapters, I was convinced that this was certainly one of the most politically dense and rich events in the last few decades. Although the policy problem, regulating the production and sale of cigarettes, seems simple and readily comprehensible, the attempts to address it raise an almost unbelievable number of exciting and serious issues in constitutional government and democratic politics."

Weisss Herbal Medicine Classic Edition or Shopping

Weiss's Herbal Medicine, Classic Edition

Author: R Weiss

The classic edition is back! First published in 1988, WEISS'S HERBAL MEDICINE is revered by herbalists and medical professionals alike as the seminal work in the field of phytotherapy. This book has established itself as an indispensable resource and is widely acknowledged as the key text in the field of medical herbalism.

You will find clear, detailed information on treating conditions ranging from colds and influenza to rheumatic problems, metabolic and endocrine disorders, cancer, and much more. Conveniently arranged by organ system, the text provides guidelines for prescribing herbal remedies, with sections on dosage, application, and precautionary measures.

Plus, for each plant discussed, you will find lists of their occurrence, botanical features, differentiation from related species, constituents, and medical benefits. Proprietary formulations, full references, and a comprehensive subject index of almost 2,000 entries round out the superb coverage!

Weiss's life's work examines the subject of herbal medicine from both a clinical and practical viewpoint, incorporating his personal observations and clinical experience with scientific studies. This material formed the basis of HERBAL MEDICINE, 2/E, also by Thieme. The second edition, revised, expanded and modernized by Volker Fintelmann, streamlines the work into a more clinical text, incorporating the latest scientific research and Commission E findings on the efficacy of herbs. This edition is recommended for allopathic physicians and other medical professionals who are new to the field of herbal medicine.

Professor Rudolf Fritz Weiss (1895-1991) is highly regarded as the "foundingfather" of modern German phytotherapy. He studied botany and medicine at the University of Berlin, qualifying as a doctor in 1922 and subsequently taking additional qualifications in internal medicine. A teaching post in herbal medicine was interrupted by war service as an army doctor, followed by seven years in Russian captivity as a doctor in prisoner-of-war camp hospitals. After retiring from clinical practice in 1961, he devoted his life to the scientific development and acceptance of herbal medicine. Weiss was appointed as a member of the German Commission E in 1978. He was founder and editor of the Zeitschrift fuer Phytotherapie, and lectured on current advances in the subject at the University of Tuebingen.

Hasty Gourmet Low Salt Favorites or Living Well

Hasty Gourmet Low Salt Favorites: 300 Easy-to-Make, Great-Tasting Recipes for a Healthy Lifestyle

Author: Bobbie Mostyn

This first installment of the Hasty Gourmet series includes 300 healthy, savory dishes that are sure to please without requiring lots of time in the kitchen. From appetizers and soups to entrees and desserts that span Asian, Hispanic, and Mediterranean influences as well as traditional American comfort food, these recipes use readily available ingredients, have easy-to-follow directions, and take less than 30 minutes to prepare. Although created specifically for those required to monitor their salt intake, the majority of recipes are also low in fat and cholesterol- and sugar-free. Each recipe contains a complete listing of the nutritional information and total sodium content per ingredient. Hints on stocking a low-salt pantry, general cooking techniques, food labeling guidelines, and calorie and nutrient vignettes help make the switch to low-salt cooking easy and delicious.

Library Journal

In the first volume of a projected series of "Hasty Gourmet" cookbooks, Mostyn (Pocket Guide to Low Sodium Foods) begins with a discussion of the "low-salt lifestyle" with accompanying sidebars and boxes of useful information, including a quiz on which foods have more sodium (Manhattan or New England clam chowder?). The recipes follow and are arranged by course or type of food, with many familiar dishes adjusted for low-sodium diets, e.g., chicken quesadillas, roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, and bread pudding. Each recipe features a sidebar of comments (suggestions), nutritional information per serving, and the total amount of sodium and fat per ingredient. Some recipes contain "Food Notes" or "Variations" that provide additional information. This cookbook assumes that the reader has some knowledge of cooking, if a potato pancake recipe lacking guidance on the amount of batter to use is any indication. While the American Heart Association's Low-Salt Cookbook remains the bible on the subject, Mostyn's book is an excellent addition to the healthy cooking section of any library.-Christine Bulson, SUNY at Oneonta Lib. The Needs of the Dying or In Vitro Fertilization

The Needs of the Dying: A Guide for Bringing Hope, Comfort, and Love to Life's Final Chapter

Author: David Kessler

In gentle, compassionate language, The Needs of the Dying helps us through the last chapter of our lives. Author David Kessler has identified key areas of concern: the need to be treated as a living human being, the need for hope, the need to express emotions, the need to participate in care, the need for honesty, the need for spirituality, and the need to be free of physical pain. Examining the physical and emotional experiences of life-challenging illnesses, Kessler provides a vocabulary for family members and for the dying that allows them to communicate with doctors, with hospital staff, and with one another, and-at a time when the right words are exceedingly difficult to find-he helps readers find a way to say good-bye. Using comforting and touching stories, he provides information to help us meet the needs of a loved one at this important time in our lives.

Safe Dieting for Teens

Author: Linda Ojeda

Today's teenagers are faced with a mind-boggling number of weight and lifestyle challenges and contradictions. They are less active than ever before (thank you TV, cars, computers and less PE in school), are served unhealthy fast foods in school and huge servings in restaurants but are constantly urged to try fad diets to look like stick-thin celebrities. The first edition of Safe Dieting for Teens introduced the basics of nutrition and exercise along with information on eating disorders and weight loss programs, helpful tips for teens and parents and much more. This book addresses the need for warm-up exercises, analyzes the stretching process, and illustrates anatomy and basic biomechanics. Myths associated with stretching are dispelled. For example, many people believe that stretches and warm-up exercises are the same, when in fact, warm-up exercises should be a preparation for stretches. The Thinking Person's Guide to Sobriety

Author: Bert Pluymen

"Could I, of all people have a drinking problem?"

That is the question Bert Pluymen once asked himself. As a highly successful attorney, he was the last person anyone would think of as an alcoholic. Can a busy person who never misses a day of work, never drinks in the morning or wakes up with the shakes, who's never been arrested or lost a job, be addicted to alcohol? When he considered two crucial questions, Bert Pluymen came up with his answer.
-Do I regularly try to moderate the amount I drink?
-Do I need alcohol to have fun?
Answering yes to these questions sparked Pluymen's realization that life could be so much more fulfilling if he was sober. This book is Bert Pluymen's story of struggle and triumph over alcohol addiction. It also contains insightful, witty, uplifting, and wryly humorous stories of the many people Pluymen met who were also searching for sobriety. This is an informative book that will shed new light on how alcohol abuse can ruin people's lives--even if they thought it could never happen to them.

This book is transformative. I can't begin to tell you how many people have been moved to examine their lives because of it. -- WKRC Radio, Cincinnati

EastSide Weekend

Much more than a book that shatters some of the most commonly held notions about alcoholism, The Thinking Person's Guide to Sobriety is about living a joyful, passionate, and peaceful life.

What People Are Saying

Donald W. Goodwin
This book is not necessarily for the full-blown alcoholic, but for people who worry about whether their drinking has 'crossed the line.' Full of facts, interspersed with anecdotes, this is a worthy addition to alcoholism literature. -- (Donald W. Goodwin, M.D., author of Alcoholism: The Facts)

Ann W. Richards
Plain talk and personal experiences make Bert Pluymen's book a real guide for anyone whose life has been touched by addiction. The section on women is especially good. -- (Ann W. Richards, former governor of Texas)

Hip Tranquil Chick addresses that huge but unacknowledged demographic of fashionistas equally at home at Bergdorf's and the yoga studio. The book is divided into two major sections that cover all bases for the style-minded seeker. "On the Mat" shares seven must-have modern-girl yoga sequences, such as "Healing Hip Openers" and "Negativity Releasing Heart Openers," and explains yoga philosophy in hip chick language. "Off the Mat" showases nine ways to become more fabulous and balanced by incorporating yogic qualities like introspection, strength, and flexibility into daily life. The nine lifestyle chapters reveal how to turn on-the-mat wear into on-the-town style, how to create soulful surroundings at home and work, mindful money management, finding a passion-filled career, how strategic soiree-throwing creates community, tips for practicing social consciousness, and more. Each chapter is accompanied by helpful "OMwork" to translate these concepts into reality. Abundant illustrations accentuate the text, and a "savvy sources" section encourages further exploration.

Healthy Aging or The Higher Self

Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Physical and Spiritual Well-Being

Author: Andrew Weil

Hugely informative, practical, and uplifting. Healthy Aging is infused with the engaging candor and common sense that have made Dr. Andrew Weil our most trusted source on healthy living.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT:

– The Anti-inflammatory Diet: following Dr. Weil's guide to eating right for a healthy lifestyle

Separating myth from fact about vitamins, herbs, hormones, anti-aging "medicines," and other would-be elixirs of life extension

Mastering exercise, breathing, and stress-management techniques to benefit your mind and body

– Understanding the science behind the aging process

– Sharing life lessons with your loved ones

Publishers Weekly

America's best-known complementary care physician offers a convincing portrait of aging as a natural part of life that can be active, productive and satisfying. Using the examples of his mother, who died at age 93; centenarians from Okinawa and Sardinia; and myths and legends, Weil (Eating Well for Optimum Health) explores common Western beliefs and attitudes about aging and urges readers to develop healthier perspectives. The 60-year-old author assesses the growing and lucrative field of anti-aging medicine, takes the position that aging is not reversible, and offers many ways for readers to prevent conditions and illnesses that limit mortality and ensure well-being into the later years. He provides scientifically based information on why and how the body ages and advice on key components of good health at every age: exercise, nutrition, vitamins and herbs, and stress-relieving activities. Much of this advice is available in Weil's previous works as well as on his Web site. The real value is Weil's courageous stand, one likely to meet resistance in a culture devoted to external indicators of eternal youth. Refreshingly, Weil embraces the notion, popular in Eastern cultures, that age brings wisdom, peace and prosperity of a different kind. Agent, Richard Pine. (Oct. 18) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

In his latest book, Weil (director, Program in Integrative Medicine, Univ. of Arizona; 8 Weeks to Optimum Health) explains the aging process and offers practical guidelines for maintaining good health while growing older. He begins with a discussion of the physiological processes involved before segueing into various antiaging therapies and explaining why they don't work. Using reputable scientific studies as a basis, he provides tools that will help us age well: good nutrition to minimize inflammation, the cause of cardiovascular disease; physical activity; a few well-chosen nutritional supplements; adequate rest and sleep; stress reduction; and a satisfying social and spiritual life. Although this is not groundbreaking information, Weil's inclusion of scientific sources sets his book apart from the glut of antiaging titles, e.g., Michael F. Roizen's The RealAge Makeover: Take Years Off Your Looks and Add Them to Your Life. Highly recommended for public and consumer health libraries. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 6/1/05.]-Barbara M. Tank Top Arms, Bikini Belly, Boy Shorts Bottom: Tighten and Tone Your Body with as Little as 10 Minutes a Day

Author: Minna Lessig

Fitness supermodel and personal trainer Minna Lessig presents a 4-week sculpting program to help women tone their trouble spots—with results in as little as 10 days!

An emerging superstar in the fitness field—with credits that include a weekly spot on CBS's The Early Show, three best-selling fitness DVDs, and more, Minna Lessig has a personal training client list that ranges from busy moms like her to world-class athletes like Yankee baseball star Alex Rodriguez, who attributed a record-breaking season while he was with the Seattle Mariners to Lessig's off-season strength and conditioning program.

In her first book, Tank Top Arms, Bikini Belly, Boy Shorts Bottom, Minna Lessig assembles the most effective time-saving exercises designed to target the arms, abs, and buttocks. This is cutting-edge fitness—a 4-week program that will not only make women look better but also feel healthier, stronger, and more energetic as they go about their everyday activities. Each workout includes mind-body exercises: instead of resting between sets, readers engage in positive visualization exercises created to enhance their well-being and self-esteem. And with Minna's jump-start program, women can get results in as little as 10 days, motivating them to achieve a beautifully toned body that will look great in tank tops, bikinis with boy short bottoms, and other figure-revealing warm-weather fashions.

Publishers Weekly

There are a plethora of books aimed at women who have tried various workout regimes and abandoned them, but Lessig's stands out for its focus on "functional-training" (her exercises are designed to "mimic the movements of everyday life") and for its gradual approach: the book offers plenty that may be unfamiliar to the already-active, but really shines in taking one from total inactivity to an effective routine in manageable, injuryless increments. Lessig, who has produced three popular fitness videos, appears in more than 100 b&w photos illustrating the components of her mix-and-match regime, which combines fitness balance (cardio, flexibility and strength training are all covered) and accessibility (no gym membership required, and workouts can be done piecemeal rather than in big, blocked-out chunks of time). The book's focus on sculpting has the effect of making the workouts seem less monumental (and thus less impossible to maintain), and every other page features an affirmative aphorism offset in a "Minna Says" speech bubble ("All success inspires a little bit of fear. Let your fears inspire you to rise to the challenge"). Lessig's is a friendly, doable regime. (Apr.) Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.

The Story of My Father or Classroom Language Skills for Children with Down Syndrome

The Story of My Father: A Memoir

Author: Sue Miller

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK

In the fall of 1988, Sue Miller found herself caring for her father, James Nichols, once a truly vital man, as he succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease. Beginning an intensely personal journey, she recalls the bitter irony of watching this church historian wrestle with his increasingly befuddled notion of time and meaning. She details the struggles with doctors, her own choices, and the attempt to find a caring response to a disease whose special cruelty is to diminish the humanity of those it strikes. In luminous prose, Sue Miller has fashioned a compassionate inventory of two lives, a memoir destined to offer comfort to all sons and daughters struggling to make peace with their fathers and with themselves.
